How to record who referred an opportunity or project

Set Referred By to a contact and/or company on an opportunity or project, including the picker, key details and Sales Inbox fill.

Record the person and/or company that referred an opportunity or project. You can set either, both, or neither.

Set Referred By

  1. Open the opportunity or project.

  2. In key details, click Referred By (or set it on the create form).

  3. In the picker, search for a contact or a company. Contacts appear first; each contact row can show their company and email.

  4. Choose a contact to set the referrer person and their company. Choose a company to set only the company.

  5. To clear both, clear the field.

If you type a name and do not pick a result, Drum creates a contact with that name on save (it reuses an existing contact with the same full name when one matches). It does not create a company from this field.

What you see in key details

Key details show one Referred By line. When a contact is set, their name appears with the company underneath. When only a company is set, you see the company name alone.

Sales Inbox

When you create an opportunity from an enquiry email, Drum can fill Referred By if the email names who referred or recommended the client. An enquiry channel (for example Houzz, Instagram, Meta, or a website) is not treated as a referrer — put that in an enquiry source custom field if you track it.

On follow-up emails to an existing opportunity, Drum fills the referrer only when both the contact and company are still empty.

Referred By versus a custom field

Referred By is a built-in field that links to a contact and/or company. A custom field with a similar label (for example Referred From) is free text only and does not create that link. Use Referred By when you want the referrer tied to a Contact record.
